James' father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Katrine Eaglesome.  His maternal grandparents were Archibald Eaglesome and Marion Fulton. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Andrew, Marion, Margaret, Agnes and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 63 in 1891 in Paisley.
