Isobell was born on October 10th, 1760 in Uphall. Isobell's father was James Thomson and her mother was Isabell Robertson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Margaret Aitken. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Archibald, James, Moruis, Elisabeth and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children.
