Isabell's father was Archibald Thomson and her mother was Alison Smeal.  Her paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Isabell Robertson; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Smeal and Janet Broun. She had five brothers and four sisters, named James, George, John, Archibald, Andrew, Janet, Alison, Margaret and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
