Archibald was born on April 16th, 1786 in Uphall. Archibald's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Alison Smeal.  His paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Isabell Robertson; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Smeal and Janet Broun. He had four brothers and five sisters, named James, George, John, Andrew, Janet, Isabell, Alison, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
