Alison was born on August 28th, 1781 in Uphall and her baptism took place there on September 9th, 1781.  Alison's father was Archibald Thomson and her mother was Alison Smeal.  Her paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Isabell Robertson; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Smeal and Janet Broun. She had five brothers and four sisters, named James, George, John, Archibald, Andrew, Janet, Isabell, Margaret and Elizabeth.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
