Robert was born in April 1827 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on April 8th, 1827. Robert's father was David Stevenson and his mother was Janet Hamilton.  His paternal grandparents were William Stevenson and Margaret Patrick. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, James, James, David, Elisabeth, Margaret and Jean.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He had a half-sister named Jessie.
