John's father was David Stevenson and his mother was Jean Martin.  His paternal grandparents were William Stevenson and Margaret Patrick. He had two sisters named Margaret and Jessie.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had seven half-brothers and four half-sisters, named William, Robert, John, Joseph, James, James, David, Elisabeth, Margaret, Jean and Jean.
