Hugh's father was John Stalker and his mother was Catherine Hamilton. His paternal grandparents were John Stalker and Margaret Reid; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Hamilton and Catherine Ferguson. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Peter, Kate and Maggie. He was the second youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 84 in 1940 in Largs.
