Patrick's father was Andrew Smeal and his mother was Janet Broun.  His paternal grandparents were Patrick Smeal and Alison Samuell. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Andrew, Margaret, Alison and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
