Janet's father was Andrew Smeal and her mother was Janet Broun.  Her paternal grandparents were Patrick Smeal and Alison Samuell. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Patrick, William, Andrew, Margaret and Alison.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
