William was born on September 21st, 1701 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on September 14th, 1702. William's father was William Shaw and his mother was Jean Cleland.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, William, David, Christian, Christian, Jean and Agnes.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died before September 12th, 1760.
