William was born in 1701 and his baptism took place on February 9th, 1701 in Kilsyth. William's father was William Shaw and his mother was Jean Cleland.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, William, David, Christian, Christian, Jean and Agnes.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
