Jean was born in January 1709 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on January 23rd, 1709. Jean's father was William Shaw and his mother was Jean Cleland.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had six brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Robert, William, William, David, Christian and Agnes.  He was the second youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Jean.
