David was born in July 1706 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on July 1st, 1706. David's father was William Shaw and his mother was Jean Cleland.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, William, William, Christian, Christian, Jean and Agnes.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
