Christian's father was Alexander Shaw and his mother was Jean Tennant. His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Christian Kirkwood; his maternal grandparents were James Tennant and Jean Shaw. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Robert, James, David, William, Alexander, James, John, Thomas, Jean, Jean and Isobel. He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
