Christian was born in April 1704 in Kilsyth and her baptism took place there on April 20th, 1704. Christian's father was William Shaw and her mother was Jean Cleland.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, William, David, Jean and Agnes.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Jean.
