Elizabeth's father was Charles Caldwell Shankland and her mother was Primrose Leal Hanning. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Elsie and Martha. She was the youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 75 in 2001 in Glasgow.¹
