Hugh's father was Thomas Savage and his mother was Elspeth Bone.  His maternal grandparents were David Bone and Margaret Smith. He had a brother and a sister, named David and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 38 on November 26th, 1867 in Dreghorn.²
