William was born in 1861 in Glasgow.1   William's father was William Ross and her mother was Sarah Morrison.  Her paternal grandparents were Donald Ross and Ann Naismith; her maternal grandparents were James Morrison and Catherine Main. She had a brother and four sisters, named Ninian, Catherine, Margaret, James and Robert.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
