James' father was William Ross and his mother was Sarah Morrison.  His paternal grandparents were Donald Ross and Ann Naismith; his maternal grandparents were James Morrison and Catherine Main. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Ninian, Ninian, Robert, Catherine and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
