Robert's father was Jonathon Robertson and his mother was Helen Tait. His paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran. He had five brothers and five sisters, named James, George, John, Hugh, Edmund, Catherine, Margaret, Annie, Mary and Susan. He was the second youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 80 in 1972 in Glasgow.
