Rachel's father was John Robertson and her mother was Agnes Gourlay. Her paternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. She had two brothers and nine sisters, named William, George, Jane, Martha, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Agnes, Euphemia, Elizabeth and Margaret. She was the second oldest of the twelve children. She died at the age of 70 in 1925 in Tarbolton.
