John's father was John Rennie and his mother was Euphemia McKichan. His paternal grandparents were James Rennie and Janet Stronach. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Archibald, Catherine and Jessie. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Andrew. He died at the age of 47 on December 19th, 1885 in Selma.²
