John was born in November 1880 in Glasgow.1  John's father was David Rennie and his mother was Jeanie Muirhead.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Rennie and Janet Ross. He had two brothers named Alexander and James.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Flora.
