David's father was David Rennie and his mother was Jeanie Muirhead.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Rennie and Janet Ross. He had five brothers named Alexander, James, David, Robert and John.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Flora.  He died at the age of 1 in 1874 in Tradeston.
