Archibald's father was John Rennie and his mother was Euphemia McKichan.  His paternal grandparents were James Rennie and Janet Stronach. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Catherine, Euphemia and Jenny.  He was the third youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Andrew.
