Jane's father was John Pitt and her mother was Helen McMurren.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Pitt and Lillias Drennan; her maternal grandparents were Jonathon McMurren and Susan McAllan. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, Samuel, Helen, Elizabeth and Lily.  She was the oldest of the six children.
