Thomas was born on April 1st, 1749. Thomas' father was George Philp and his mother was Margaret Finlayson.  His maternal grandparents were James Finlayson and Anna Davidson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, George, Ann, Agnes and Christian.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
