John's father was George Philp and his mother was Margaret Finlayson.  His maternal grandparents were James Finlayson and Anna Davidson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, George, Ann, Agnes and Christian.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
