John's father was Archibald Meikle and his mother was Alison Thomson. His maternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Margaret Paterson. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Archibald, William, Robert, Andrew, William, Margaret, Janet, Helen, Isabella, Isabella and Alison. He was the oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 18 in 1892 in Kirkliston.
