James' father was Thomas Morrison McPike and his mother was Agnes McTaggart Mcclelland. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Helen and Isabella.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died due to a medical problem, Pernicious anemia, at the age of 73 on September 13th, 1941 in Ayr.  He was buried.
