Jennie's father was William McMurran and her mother was Annie Mcintosh. Her paternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named John, James, William, George, Jonathan, Thomas, Hugh, Adam, McMurran, Alison and Marion. She was the third youngest of the twelve children.
