Elisabeth was born in May 1850 in Newton-on-Ayr.1   Elisabeth's father was David McMurran and her mother was Allison McClymont.  Her paternal grandparents were Jonathon McMurren and Susan McAllan. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Jonathon, Anne and Susanah.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
