Robert's father was Hugh McLatchie and his mother was Agnes Reid.  His paternal grandparents were John McLatchie and Janet Mcowan. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Andrew, William, Hugh, Sarah, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
