John's father was John McLatchie and his mother was Janet Crawford. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Hugh, Robert, Janet, Marjory, Mary, Agnes and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He had four half-brothers named Hugh, Hugh, William and William.
