Colin's father was Peter McKay and his mother was Sarah Carmichael. His paternal grandparents were Colin McKay and Margaret McQueen; his maternal grandparents were Archibald Carmichael and Ann McQueen. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Archibald, Colin, Peter, Donald, Mary and Johnna. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 1 in 1866 in Kilbrandon-Kilchattan.
