James' father was Robert Mann and his mother was Agnes Campbell Fraser.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, Robert, Janet, Elizabeth, Isobel and Agnes.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 67 in 1907 in Kilmarnock.
