Mary's father was Hugh Keggans and her mother was Agnes Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named George, Hugh, Henry, George, John, William, Hugh, Allison, Martha, Alison, Martha, Susannah and Agnes. She was the third youngest of the fourteen children. She died at the age of 47 in 1921 in Kirkcaldy.
