Martha's father was Hugh Keggans and her mother was Agnes Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named George, Hugh, Henry, George, John, William, Hugh, Allison, Martha, Alison, Susannah, Mary and Agnes. She was the fifth youngest of the fourteen children. She died at the age of 2 in 1872 in Tarbolton.
