John's father was Hugh Keggans and his mother was Agnes Robertson. His maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named George, Hugh, Henry, George, William, Hugh, Allison, Martha, Alison, Martha, Susannah, Mary and Agnes. He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children. He died in 1864 in Irvine.
