Robert's father was David Johnston and his mother was Janet Cameron Masterton. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Jane and Ann. He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Donald and Davidina. He died at the age of 41 in 1911 in Glasgow.
