Janet's father was John Johnston and her mother was Ann Hardie Dick. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Isabella Baxter; her maternal grandparents were David Dick and Janet Grant. She had six brothers and a sister, named John, Andrew, David, Robert, George, James and Isabella. She was the second oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 63 in 1902 in East Calder.²
