Robert's father was James Henderson and his mother was Jean Aitken.  His paternal grandparents were Archibald Henderson and Elizabeth Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Aitken and Margaret Addie. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Michael, Jean, Janet, Jean, Margaret and Helen.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
