James was born on January 31st, 1814 in Falkirk and his baptism took place there on February 6th, 1814. James' father was James Henderson and his mother was Isabel Walker.  His paternal grandparents were James Henderson and Jean Aitken; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Walker and Helen Laurence. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, John, Michael, Robert, Walker, Helen, Janet and Jean.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
