Helen was born on November 11th, 1821 in Falkirk and her baptism took place there on November 18th, 1821. Helen's father was James Henderson and her mother was Isabel Walker.  Her paternal grandparents were James Henderson and Jean Aitken; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Walker and Helen Laurence. She had six brothers and two sisters, named James, Alexander, John, Michael, Robert, Walker, Janet and Jean.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
