Margaret's father was Thomas Hardie and her mother was Mary Turner.  Her maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, John, Jessie, Helen, Mary and Agnes.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
