Richard's father was Richard Nathaniel Hanning and his mother was Elshie Rennie. His maternal grandparents were Peter Rennie and Mary Ann Wood. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, John, James, Mary Ann, Elsie, Primrose and Primrose. He was the second youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 72 in 1959 in Glasgow.
