Elspit, known as Elsie, was born in 1877 in Tradeston.1 2  Elsie's father was Richard Nathaniel Hanning and her mother was Elshie Rennie.  Her maternal grandparents were Peter Rennie and Mary Ann Wood. She had four brothers and three sisters, named George, John, James, Richard, Mary Ann, Primrose and Primrose.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 78 in 1955 in Neilston.
