John's father was David Grant and his mother was Magdalene Brash.  His maternal grandparents were David Brash and Agnes Henderson. He had a brother and two sisters, named David, Jessie and Madeline.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-sisters named Christina and Rachel.
