David's father was David Grant and his mother was Magdalene Brash.  His maternal grandparents were David Brash and Agnes Henderson. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Jessie and Madeline.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-sisters named Christina and Rachel.  He died at the age of 67 in 1929 in Leith.
